Do You Think Bioethically? Then Get Your Head Examined!

  1. I am a “bioethicist”; in fact, I am one of the few with a Ph.D. concentration in bioethics for my Ph.D. in philosophy (Georgetown University and the Kennedy Institute of Ethics). “Bioethics” was created out of thin air in 1978 by the U.S. Congress (Belmont Report). I walked through the doors of the KIE in 1979, was a member of the very first formal group of 36 bioethics graduate students, and taught by the Founders of bioethics themselves. I know what bioethics is, and it is precisely what this video is portraying. After I received my Ph.D., I refused to teach “bioethics” as a legitimate “ethics”, and wrote a very long, and extensively referenced and documented article on “What is ‘bioethics’?” evaluating "bioethics" as a viable academic field, available at: http://www.lifeissues.net/writers/irv/irv_36whatisbioethics01.html. At the end there is a whole section on the incredible lack of “expertise” of bioethicists, including their lack of professional licensing. 99% of them have no degree in bioethics or in philosophy whatsoever but merely took a seminar or two somewhere. So much for “bioethics expertise”.
